Maple Weekend In New York

March 23 – 24 and March 30-31 are Maple Weekend in New York. Two weekends of all things deliciously maple. Who knew there were so many maple producers in New York State? Apples. Yes! Wine… Yes! But maple syrup, maple cream, maple coffee, maple body scrub, maple everything.
Hmmm. Which one first?

Pancakes first… definitely!

I had the privilege to visit Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm in Naples yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed their pancake breakfast. Two huge pancakes, two sausages and coffee for $7.00. Kids are even less. And to top it all off, plenty of butter and maple syrup on the table.

Maple Weekend In New York – How Maple Syrup Is Made

We took a brief tour of the maple being collected. Fascinating to think that liquid comes from a tree. There are 3,800 maple trees being tapped. You can also tour inside and see how maple is produced. And, of course, there is a maple store. Your Innkeeper purchased just a few things. Those of you that know me know that “few” might be an understatement.

Interestingly enough, the owner of Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm stopped by the 1795 Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast a few years ago to introduce me to his maple syrup. Frankly, I don’t use a lot of maple syrup. Every now and then, a guests requests syrup for their sausages or wants to sweeten our French Toast Creme Brûlée (I know, right!). I use maple syrup when I make Blueberries Bristol or on the rare occasions when I serve lemon blueberry pancakes. So, I politely turned him away (and he remembers).

BUT… now I am inspired about how I can use this beautiful, carmel liquid known as maple syrup in my breakfasts. 100% maple syrup and it tastes like it. If you have any recipes for a breakfast I can bake that requires maples syrup, let me know. I’d be happy to try it out.

And, by the way, Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm will be serving pancakes until 1:00 pm today. After that, you have to wait another year or buy some of their maple syrup and make your own. It’s worth it.
